13 OTAVALO TOUR + INDIAN CULTURE
An
8 hour tour north from Quito, passing by the towns of Calderón
(bread-dough figures) and Cayambe, where the equatorial monument
is located. We stop for a panoramic view of San Pablo lake,
and continue to Otavalo home of the most famous handicraft
market of South America. In this town we also visit the IOA
(Anthropologic Museum). We then visit the Peguche waterfall
and Iluman; a town of witch doctors where you will have the
opportunity to share this unique Indian culture. Lunch at
a colonial hacienda before we return to Quito is included
in cost.

OTAVALO TOUR -
ECOLOGICAL TREKKING
An
8 hour tour north from Quito, passing by the towns of Calderón
(bread-dough figures) and Cayambe, where the equatorial monument
is located and we reach the
Cotacachi-Cayapas ecological reserve, here we have
the opportunity to hike around this unique volcanic crater
where you will be able to admire and enjoy the natural goods
of the Ecuadorian high lands. On the way back we stop at the
Indian market of Otavalo, home of the most famous handicraft
market of South America. Lunch could be served during
the trek (box lunch) or if you prefer, lunch could
be at a colonial hacienda before we return to Quito. Either
option is included in cost.

Day
1: We travel north from Quito, beginning with a visit

then continue our drive to visit Cuicocha crater lake and
Cotacachi (leather handicrafts). Dinner and overnight at:

(Pinsaqui) or 5* (H. La Mirage) or 5*+ (H. La Mirage luxury
suite).

DAY MINDO
OR MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE
Early
start from Quito, drive northwards to the Valley of the Middle
of the World, short stop at the equatorial monument. It's
an opportunity to straddle on the Equator for a unique picture.
Thereafter we continue to Maquipucuna or Mindo protected forest
reserve where we walk one of the various cloud forest trails
(trails vary from 1hr to 5hrs). This area is known as the
birdwatcher's paradise. After lunch at the reserve we return
by car to Quito.
POSSIBLE SIGHTINGS
This incredibly bio diverse
region is home of:

Nearly
2,000 species of plants including vivid flowering varieties
such as bromeliads and orchids.

More
than 350 species of birds including the Golden headed
Quetzal, Crimson-rumped Toucan, Violet tailed Sylph, Broad-billed
Motmot and the active "Andean Crock of the Rock" lek.

At
least 45 different mammals such as the Armadillo, Spectacled
bear, Anteater, Agouti, and 19
species of Bats.

Countless
varieties of invertebrates including spectacular species
of butterflies such as
the Electric-blue Morpho.

46 MINDO OR MAQUIPUCUNA 2D/1N
Day
1: Early 6am start
from Quito, drive northwards to the Valley of the Middle of
the World. Continue through a dirt road to Yunguilla where
we will have a box breakfast. We start the hike (5hrs) through
pasturelands that surround the Maquipucuna Reserve. The trail
enters into the forest and passes through a well-maintained
culunco (pre-Inca tunnel). It is possible to visit beautiful
waterfalls; be prepared to get wet! We finally arrive at the
magnificent ecological Maquipucuna lodge, where we enjoy a
hearty meal of fresh vegetables grown and served from the
Reserve's own organic garden. After lunch an optional visit
to a local sugar cane mill where you can try a glass of guarapo
and see how firewater is locally made could be organized or
afternoon at leisure in the reserve. Dinner and overnight
at Maquipucuna lodge.
Day 2: We have an early 5am start for a guided visit
the lek of the Mountain's cock of the rock bird. You will
have the opportunity to see this and many other exotic bird.
We return to Maquipucuna lodge to enjoy breakfast and on return
to Quito, we visit a farm of fresh water fish, pineapples,
guayaba and palmito. Lunch at the volcanic crater of Pululahua(
the only active inhabited crater of the world) and visit to
the Equatorial monument.

47 FULL DAY TINALANDIA OR ARASHA
An 8 hrs. tour south-west
from Quito passing through the cloud forest located town of
Aloag, Tandapi and Alluriquín to the subtropical area
of Santo Domingo, where we visit the Colorado Indian Reserve.
After lunch at Tinalandia birdwatchers' hotel, we do a hike
through the forest trails of the ecological reserve or enjoy
the services of the lodge (golf court, swimming pool and ping-pong).
After enjoying Tinalandia's hospitality, we return to Quito.

1:
Same itinerary as full day Tinalandia. Dinner and overnight
at Tinalandia lodge 3*).
Day 2: Early in the morning we walk through the reserve
for bird watching (possible views of hummingbirds, finches,
woodpeckers, toucans, etc.) and to observe it's magnificent
flora. Later we visit a banana farm plantation as well as
a cacao plantation. After lunch, we return to Quito.
