BASIC TOURISM INFORMATION
Despite
its small area, Ecuador offers many diversified attractions
for tourism. Two branches of the Andes Mountain System slide
up a perfect contrast of regions.
Divided
into 4 regions: Coastal region (Costa),
Highlands -Northern, Central
and Southern- (Sierra), Amazon
(Orient) and the Galapagos Archipelago;
Ecuador forms a full mosaic of nature, landscapes and cultures.
Within
a few hours you can travel from the warmth of our beaches
and tropical rain forests to snow capped volcanoes and Andean
glaciers. Even the parallel 00°00'00" passes through our country
and gives us its name.
Although
it is only the size of Colorado, Ecuador is one of the world's
most bio-diversified countries in both: flora and fauna. For
instance, we have 11% of the world's total and 30% of Latin
America's orchid varieties. A 10% of the world's vascular
plants are located within an area that covers just 0,2% of
the Earth's surface, represented in 25,000 species, more than
whole North America.
There
is no other country in Latin America with such a huge variety
of birds as Ecuador; 10% of the world's total species live
here (1550), even though Brazil is 30 times larger.
Nature
combines with a mixture of traditions and ancestral customs
that belong to indigenous cultures and Spanish influence,
which are still to be found.
In
1978, UNESCO declared Quito
(Capital City) one of the
world's cultural heritage sites. Colonial churches and buildings
dating from XVI, XVII and XVIII century surround its center,
known as the old town.
Indian
markets such as Otavalo, Saquisilí, Pujilí, Ambato, Latacunga
where people dedicate themselves to handicrafts beautifully
made in wool, leather, wood, silver or gold, can be found
around the country; as well as amazing animal markets.
