QUITO & SURROUNDINGS INFORMATION
Cultural Heritage of Mankind

QUITO

The capital of Ecuador was declared by UNESCO as “Cultural Heritage of Mankind ” for its rich architectural beauty, seen in its churches, convents, cathedrals, and more… all built in the colonial period, some of them such as La Compañia and San Francisco, are famous for its religious art.

At 9500 feet above sea level and 13 miles south of the equator, Quito, Ecuador's capital city, was founded on top of Inca ruins on the 6th. of December 1534 by Sebastian de Benalcazar.

The Spanish architectural influence can be admired in the style of houses and buildings of its historical center, their balconies and tiled roofs can be seen along the narrow and cobblestone streets. Quito, a modern city with living history within it!!.

A strategic point from which a trip starts, a metropolis that offers diverse hotel infrastructure, restaurants, convention centers, shopping malls, cinemas and every entertainments that a tourist could ever need.

Old and new town, valleys and mountains are mixed in a city of charming people, Quito. This city is located in an inter Andean valley close to Pichincha volcano.

Surrounded by mountains it owns a wonderful scenery of snowcapped volcanoes. Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world, is one of them.

Quito is divided into three areas: the Modern North, the Industrial South and the Colonial Center. In a standard half day city + middle of the world tour, we start in your hotel (Northern area) and continue onto the Colonial area.

The old town is a mixture of magnificent churches, convents, museums governmental buildings and culture. In 1978, UNESCO declared Quito part of world's cultural heritage. Its buildings, paintings and carvings are treasures dating from the XVI, XVII, XVIII and XIX century. Each spot of the city is full of tradition and mysterious legends as well as stories of forbidden loves.

The Basilica, a "Notre Dam" replica, is at the entrance of the old town. Once you get into that area, Ecuador's legacy is represented everywhere. Gorgeous inner courtyard buildings, the Cathedral, the Presidential and Archbishop Palace are surrounding our main square.

"El Sagrario", a small beautiful church known for its splendid front door; "La Compañia", showing its incredible stone carving entrance and the two tons of gold that gild it; San Francisco, consisting in three blocks of construction divided into convent, school and church, are the main attractions we visit on the walking part of the tour.

Protecting our heritage is the Virgin of Panecillo; a wonderful sculpture located at the top of a hill. That is the best viewpoint in the whole city. Here we can admire Quito's panoramic splendor.

The city's ring road is a fine opportunity to enjoy a spectacular view, at one end of it, we have the "Mitad del Mundo" (Middle of the World) monument, where we can visit the ethnological museum with a complete explanation of today's Ecuador indigenous tribes ways of living.

All kind of Amazon, Coastal and Highland handicrafts can be found at the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, a colonial town replica, where shopping and enjoying several tourist services is part of that complex.

A drive through the new town, residential neighborhoods and commercial areas will complete the perfect introductory visit to this Andean city.
